He has been remarried for nearly forty years and has one surviving son from each marriage, and two grandchildren. He and his wife have informally adopted four teen-aged girls and two families. One, a homeless family of six, lived with them for four years. The husband of the other family died suddenly last year at age 50, leaving a widow and two young daughters.
